So, I get told by a friend that a grotty old fish ship he goes too had a Mayan cichlid and he knew I’ve been after one for ages for my American cichlid community tank ( this is where I grow stuff out before they are moved )

I head straight to the shop and this little fella is in a tank around 30/40cm long with 2 large African cichlids and he’s being absolutely hammered.

He’s marked up as a Mayan, he was jet black and on his side, I of course rescued him for him tank of doom

When I get him home and start to bring him back to life I realise I’ve seen these type before and of course he’s a Trimac

Has anyone got any info for me or tips on keeping him with other cichlids.

Currently in with 3 red terrors, 3 beani and a black belt

Clean water, no stress, and maybe a pinch of salt. I personally would not have added him into an existing tank as that can make him a target into an existing hierarchy and would’ve quarantined for at least 2-4 weeks based on what it looks like. One not only to make sure it’s not carrying diseases but secondly given him some time to heal up.

As mention above, would have let him heal up before adding to existing tank with tank mates. Trimac are beast of fish, can hold their own with much larger fish as long as they have the space. My big boy was always hungry and would eat everything I fed him. Not picky one bit. I sold my large male and he was 13-14”. He did not fit in a 5 gallon bucket when they picked him up.

i had thought about this but my quarantine tank is unavailable at the moment and i really needed to get him in something. He has been doing good and his colour come back after about 24 hours and he’s eating and swimming about but he has become a bit of a bully to the black belt and 1 of the beani. The red terrors are the only thing he don’t have a go at. He only getting aggressive when feeding so I’m hoping he just calms down at feeding time. As he’s not quite what I was after I think I’ll move him on once he’s back to full health and looking the part.

He looks like a lovely fish but on research I can see they get enormous

Knowing he got the snot beat out of him he don't look so bad, i think he has great potential as everyone has said you should put him in a QT tank let him heal give him a chance with those Festae.
Treat him as you would with most Amps IME the Trimac will be more personable then the Festae. and if given the chance could become the tank boss
Being in the UK that is a good find either get him his own tank as a wet pet or get ready to deal with hell in a cell
