Seems like a lot of larger loaches are going for mucho money. What is their growth rate? I want to end up with large ones and it just seems like getting small ones from a LFS is a better option for me..

Very slow growth rate, hence the heavy price for large ones.

They grow pretty quickly to 4-5 inches, after that it slows down A TON though. As mentioned this is why the big ones cost so much more.

To many factors to consider...

Depends on things like diet, water quality, tank size, tank mates, stress levels, etc.

Def. a long time thou to get to 5in. from what you originally have!

Keep your quality good, and you might get them to 4 or 5" in a year.
