Since hair algae tends to be one of the biggest problems in ponds I thought it would be helpful to post a thread about how different people control hair algae in their pond. Just post how you control hair algae in your pond so other people can decide which method(s) is/are best for them.

I’ll start.

The ways I control hair algae is simply take a stick or a poll, stick it in the water, and turn it around to so the algae wraps around it. Then I pull it out. I also just reach my hand in, grab a clump, and pull it out.

Same... I use a small kids rake and spin it around like pasta. I sometime use a bacteria podwer that helps break it down.

I found an absolute cure for string algae.

Bull Frog tadpoles. Yep, it is a bit off the wall but very affective. My wife and I were taking a sampling of small koi with a Seine net. However we invertible also caught 300-400 large bull frog tadpoles. We had a friend ask us recently for some tadpoles so we carried the tadpoles into the greenhouse and placed them into an 800 gallon flow-through tub that had 3 to 4" string algae covering every surface. The tub was not being used at the time for any koi. This was late in the evening just at dark. Early next morning at daylight while checking on all the koi in the greenhouse. I noticed that the tadpole tub looked so strange. The tadpoles had nearly consumed all of the string algae during the night and by lunch time the walls of the 800 gallon tub were completely clean and alga free. Only problem is is if you keep small koi or other fish outside. The adult frogs will devour them.

:topic: Do you ship BF tadpoles?

Oh ya, I filter too much to get it...

Dr Joe, We just give the BF tadpoles away around here locally. I don't know if it is legal to sell or ship them so we don't offer them for sale.
