obivously first and foremost im guessing to start with anything over what they can eat. is there any types of fish to steer clear of? any that work very well? and about how big does a fish have to be before the shark would cause a problem? also, does either shark do better with tankmates than the other?

cheers:)

i guess i mean how big do fish have to be before the shark would stalk them and see them as a potential snack?

It's a question of how small, not how big. Much like groupers, lions, etc - if it fits in the mouth, it can be considered food if it isn't fast enough or smart enough to hide.

Hi

In my tank at mo threre is a coral cat shark, a blue ringed angel, a volitan lion, a zebra eel, a dragon eel , a blue trigger and 3 soldier fish. The coral cat is as good as gold as long as its well fed. They dont just snap at anything they are extremely good at detecting what is around it, the 'field' aound it extends about 2 inches. I have witnessed on many occasions the cat lunge at the smaller soldier fish if it gets within 2 inches of its mouth however when it passes over/around the larger fish it (has) never lunges at any part of them, feeding time can be a little boisterous if the dragon has one end of a peice of squid and the cat the other! although experience has taught me a particular feeding method, which does include a large stick! A big no no for cats in any kind of crustacean i had a huge shame face crab over 4 inches across, in the tank introduced the cat and it killed and ate the crab within a day......and that was one tough crab. They are pritty lazy, if well fed will stay hidden for most of the time. My coral cat is black and white with silver eyes not brown or off white as I have seen ,in my opnion a beautiful colour morph, about 14 inches long but quite skinny by design. Eats pritty much anything squid, fish, crab etc .....Oh yes dont mix with ray all above said i have seen one attack the wings of a blue spot stingray!

Just 2 say I am not an expert just passing on my experience, hope they help :)

helps quite a bit thank u! i mean anyone can find facts in books articles etc... but its nice to hear a first hand experience.

I have had a Dog face Puffer and two Snowflake with my nurse shark. Rule of thumb smaller then the mouth it more and likely will be eaten. Now after I sold the puffer and the eels I went with a Brown, Gray Bamboo, and Coral cat with my Nurse and never had a problem and the Bamboo's are 3 weeks old. The Coral cat is about 3 inches longer then the Nurse.

so about how big of a fish would a coral cat swallow? a gray bamboo?

I used to keep my sharks with eels, damsels, groupers.. They get along with pretty much everything. It's the fish who might pick on the shark that you have to worry about. Puffers and triggers might not be good with sharks. But, then again you might get some that work out perfectly.

It's all really trial and error. As for the shark eating fish.. It should have to be something like a goby or other bottom sitting fish in order for it to catch it. Most fish are quicker than the shark and/or know to stay out of it's way when feeding.

I did have a few times were the shark went into a feeding frenzy and tried to eat a few of my golden tail morays. The eel was able to get away though without injury. So keeping up on the feeding will help prevent this type of reaction.

Good luck with the sharks, they are amazing creatures.

well im not dead set on a shark just yet. im just trying to educate myself on all the possibilities so i can do this right.
