I heard of a spot close to where I live that has an abundance of crays. Before I go out there and bring some home I was wonderring about parasites. Do they carry parasites/disease that can transmit to fish? How do I treat them? Any help appreciated.

They are EXTREMELY intolerant of most tropical fish parasite treatments on the market. You probably will not even get away with a 50% dosage as with some scaleless and sensitive fish species.

They are not very salt tolerant either, but it is my understanding that there is only one parasite that they carry that can tolerate tropical fish temperature ranges. I am by no means an expert, but until someone more knowledgeable chimes in, I would think that your best bet is to quaranteen them in 78 - 82 degree F water for a week or so. Good luck!

Thanks, Im going to go get some in the next day or two. I think I will set up a 10g quarantine before I go. Its summer in the desert here so just leaving it outside is going to get it nice an warm too.
Anyone else have advice?

Here is a parasite that is sometimes found on crayfish. Out of 5 that I owned, only one had this problem. You can't see it until you have the crayfish underwater. Put them in a jar or something with water, hold it to the light and you will see them crawling everywhere. I couldn't get youtube video to link. Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ls6Q_ZpfJU
Some people say the worms are beneficial by keeping the crayfish clean. Good Luck. You might want to carry something like a jar with you when you collect the crayfish. Look at them before you carry them home. Good Luck.
