Hi guys I set up another 125 gallon tank and currently have a cuban cichlid, salvini, and convict in there. I want to move my red devil and texas from my other cichlid tank over but want my cuban to get some more size first. I wanted to know if anyone knows how fast these guys grow, mine is about 2 inches right now. My red devil and Texas are about 5. Also anyone know how aggressive Cubans are. Some people tell me it's on par with a jag while others say they are mild mannered. Thanks

I have a 9inch cuban I bought a year ago at 1 inch, he was growing about 1 inch a month until 5 inches and then growth slowed down alot, also my male cuban is pretty docile with other fish but I've heard some are crazy aggressive

Yup my experience was that they are pretty slow growing, at least compared to quick growers like a red devil.
mine was not all that aggressive but was smaller than most fish in the tank. Mine was bought at probably 4-5" and in a couple years got to probably 8-9" or so before I sold him. Has been a while (over a decade) so I forget the exact growth rate but I know he was on slower side.

When I think about putting a certain cichlid species in a cichlid community, I look at how it lives in nature.
If it lives in an area with other cichlid species, chances are favorable that it might accept being in a community.
But if that cichlid is geographically isolated, there may be less chance of a community possibility.
Mayaheros beanii is one of those, it is basically the only cichlid in its north western Mexican habitat, and it often shows that evolutionary isolation by not playing well with others.
Nandopsis haitiensus is another prime example.
In Cuba, N tetracanthus is also not found with other cichlid species, there may have been other cichlids at some time millions of years ago, but the possibility that tetracanthus was able to outcompete, or drive others to extinction, may be why it is the sole survivor. So although there may be possibility of a copacetic community outcome, odds may be less so.
I kept a pair of tetracanthus in a 125 gal, there ....they would allow no othercichlids alive in that size tank . Maybe it was because they were a pair.
A friend kept a pair in a 220 cichlid community, but no other cichlids seemed to dare enter that side of the tank, even though the others were larger, so it my work. But.....If it were me, I'd have another tank at the ready if things go south as a contingency plan.

Ok thanks alot for that info. I have a empty tank someone can be put in if they don't play well in either of my 125s so ill keep an eye on aggression and hope for the best. The only fish im worried about right now is The red devil but he seems to play nice as long as everyone below him in the hierarchy knows he is in charge. The rd is also good for the tank because he keeps my crazy texas cichlid in check ?

Ive never kept one but when they did pop up in the LFS they advised against putting them in a 120G that I had salvinis in as they said the cubans would shred them. They are quite rare and expensive here so i figured if the LFS owner is discouraging me from buying 2 $50 fish there must be something to it.

Oh wow. Ironically mine is in with a salvini and convict right now. Salvini is bigger right now but we will see what happens as the cuban gets larger. Thanks for all the good info everyone

From my experience with Cuban cichlids I think they seem to be on the more aggressive side of the cichlid spectrum. In January of 2019 I put 5 Cubans and 3 Texas cichlids ranging from 1-2 inches in my 125. During the next 4 months the aggression and fighting between all the fish was nothing I had ever experienced in all my years fish keeping. At that point I moved the Texans to another tank and it did seem to calm the aggression down. Eventually my largest Cuban who I think is male started the getting real aggressive with everyone. I removed the others and now have the one left. He is at least 8 inches after 18 months.

Oh wow. I plan on putting my red devil and Texas in with the cuban and others once the cuban grows more. Hopefully it works out
