datnioides polota

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
polota, Coius Hamilton 1822:95, 370, Pl. 38 (fig. 31) [Fishes Ganges; ref. 2031]. Ganges R. estuaries, India. No types known. •Treated as a synonym of Datnioides quadrifasciatus (Sevastianov 1809) by Roberts 1989:165 [ref. 6439], and as a synonym of Coius quadrifasciatus (Sevastianov 1809) by Roberts & Kottelat 1994:258 [ref. 21569], but quadrifasciatus is apparently not available and polota would be valid as Coius polota. •Valid as Datnoides [sic] polota (Hamilton 1822) -- (Rahman 1989:325 [ref. 24860]). Datnioides polota (Hamilton 1822). Datnioididae. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific. Habitat: freshwater, brackish.

Here is some new info I've found, apparently they are considered to be Silvers?? thats what i got from this. The pics look more like microlepis to me.

Thanks, but ive already found out that the polota is a synonym for the quad. not the pulcher. So it still stands as the 5 species. d.pulcher, d.cambelli, d. microlepis, d. under....something or other..and d. quad..something or other with the polota being a quad. sorry i dont know the spelling of the scientific names for the american tiger and the thinbar.
sorry for any confusion.

Fishbase has the wrong picture for D. quadrifasciatus/D. polota, which is the "silver datnoid." Apparently, they've now determined that D. polota is the correct name.

Thanks! thats what i figured when i saw the pic of it. I also found in an article from practical fishkeeping that states that D. quadrifasciatus is now considered a junior synonym, replaced by the name D. polota.
Im assuming by "junior synonym" that it is still an accurate name?

No. The rules of taxonomy require that the name attach to the first correct description. A junior synonym is a subsequent description of the same species. Thus, Datnioides polota, which came first, is now the valid name. D. quadrifasciatus is now deemed to be invalid.

 Love the spelling!

Here's essentially the same list, without the humorous spellings:

ST/CT = Siamese tiger/Cambodian tiger, aka widebar, Datnioides pulcher
IT = Indonesian tiger, Datnioides microlepis
AT = American tiger (not really from America), aka silver dat, Datnioides polota (formerly quadrifasciatus)
NTT = North Thailand tiger, aka thinbar, Datnioides undecimradiatus
NGT = New Guinea tiger, Datnioides campbelli
