I don't know if this is in the right section so sorry if it isn't. Yesterday I was at petsupermarket (it's like petsmart) and in the "assorted african cichlid" tank there was this extremely healthy looking blue and black striped cichlid there. So I decided to do some research on it and I think it is a cichlid called the "demasoni cichlid" because they look exactly alike. Well it's only $4 and it's practically newborn. Is this a good deal? I would also like to know about maximum size for them and what size tank I will need. It is probably less than an inch right now. I do not know much about african cichlids and would like as much help as possible. It doesn't seem aggressive at all right now either, and has extremely bright colors and absolutely NO nips on the fins.

If its a demadoni thats a decent price. Denasoni are very agg fish and grow to 3 1/2 - 4" i breed these in a 55g tank for like 2 yrs.
Demasoni, an interesting fish. Solo they are super aggressive. If kept in a community tank solo they will terrorize and kill most fish if the tank is under 125 gallons. Best if kept in a group in a community tank that is shorter than 6 ft long. Con-specific aggression makes them relatively peaceful to other tank mates when kept in a group larger than 5. They grow rapidly reach sexual maturity in 6 or so months if fed properly they can grow out in a 20 or 30 gallon. Its their aggression you need to watch most don't get more than 2 inches. I also breed these fish.

Thank you very much! The only open tank I have is a 20 gallon tank with platys and danios. So I'm pretty much screwed because they only have one in the store and I would have dead little fish.
Well, if it is a frontosa then that again would not work in a 20 gallon tank. They grow slowly, but am pretty sure they can get to about 12"+. If you plan to upgrade then maybe, but unless you know you will be upgrading I wouldn't get it. It might be a good deal, but if you can't provide the care/room it needs they you shouldn't do it. A lot of people get fish that grow large "knowing" they'll upgrade when necessary. Then when the time comes they never do and either get rid of their fish and start over or leave the fish in terrible conditions (oscars are one fish that this unfortunately occurs regularly with).
I am not actually getting it I am just seeing info on it so in case I ever want to get it I know how to properly care for it. I know about frontosas already but thanks anyways.
In an assorted african cichlid tank, at a big box store, what you saw was most likely a female Metriaclima lombardoi.
