i am relatively new to fishkeeping, only having a experience of 1.5 years. I admit i know nothing about fish keeping as compared to a plethora of other much more experienced fish keepers. However, my first ever monster fish was a small pacu,(I still have it) which eventually led me to finding this website and i am extremely glad that did. The information provided here is absent from numerous other websites, articles, wikipedias, etc, which is the sole reason why MFK has become such a big community. So first of all, i would like to thank the MFK community for accepting me, treating me in a extremely freindly manner and guiding me through the innumerable problems which i faced in my journey.
While i am still inexperienced, my research in pacu fish has led me to some findings, which i am sure a lot of people are aware of. However i failed to notice a informative thread on this topic so i decided to post it. My apologizes if i am posting unnecessary information or repeating the same old information available on this website, which i am yet to find. So lets get back to the main topic.
My research has revealed that there is one way to tell between a male and female pacu, by looking at the adipose fin.
Males have a sharp, theeth like or jagged adipose fin, like in the picture below
while females have a much rounded adipose fin, like below
The pics belong to google or other websites.
However it should be noted that some new or inexperienced members may struggle to differentiate by only looking at the adipose fin, due to its extremely small size.
Also, the difference becomes more prominent in larger specimens, like 1 feet or above. Anything smaller than that would make it more difficult to differentiate.
i welcome any criticism or additional knowledge. Hopefully more members will chime in.
