When you seen enough bichirs from both sides (wc & cb) you will realise it easy to tell.
We would need a tank full of bichirs and a couple of beers and hrs for me to explain all the subtle differences but here are a few very simple basic rules.
Look out for froggy eyes. CB bichirs tend to have them.
CB Nigerian lap
WC Nigerian lap
WC bichirs have more define markings (especially ard the cheeks) and nicer colour. CB tend to just be a mess.
CB Nigerian lap 2 different examples
WC Nigerian lap 2 different examples. And an Endi
Look out for reverse"D" shape fins on their backs. CB bichirs have them while WCs have sharper looking finlets. I dun have good pics of this. But I will try anyway.
CB PBB
WC PBB when just introduced to my tank
Head shape. This is through experience, but WC then to have nicer, boxy, sharper heads. More snake like. If you seen enough, you would understand.
WC heads
I'm not too good with upper jaws, but for Dels I look out for body shape and markings. It's common for CB dels to have a hump and messy or less markings. But then again, Japan has really nice CB dels. But for me, WC is still the way to go.
CB Del
WC Dels
At the end of the day, these are just my own exmaples and opinions. If you truly immerse yourself in the poly world, you will see the difference between not just CB and WC but different variants of the same species. Like Nigerian lap vs guinea laps vs Koliba/Kolonton. It takes expreience to tell the difference, but we are not all full of hot air, well, some of us at least.
