Ok so have a lady who is giving me a Dinosaur Longfin Palmas eel as she is turning her tank into a saltwater. Was wondering how big they get and would they be ok in a 55 gallon tank.

You mean polypterus palmas right?? they grow to a absolute max of 14 or 12 inches. Will take quite some time though. yup, it's pretty good for a 55 gallon for life.

I have a feeling it will be a "Long fin" Polypterus Senegalus.

Can grow to around 12". More in certain setups, less in smaller setups.

If it looks like this (banding coloration) it's a Palmas Polypterous Bichir, or Palmas Poly for short...

If it is normal green its a Senagal Polypterous Bichir, or a more common Senagal Bichir. Like this one...Here next to an albino Senegal.

Can't wait to see what you found!

Close.
The First picture is Polypterus Palmas Polli or "Palmas Polli" for short.

But Senegalus is very commonly referred to as Dinosaur Bichir.
It is also the most commonly found long fin.

Either way, 55gal is Ok for the one piece.

Palmas Polypterous was only the subgroup I was referring to, I didn't break it down further because I get confused with the names after that...But thanks for the corrections.

I had a buettikoferi before, but I found out it's proper name was a palmas buettikoferi ...And then there's the palmas palmas-the rare one within the 'Palmas' sub species right? Lots of subspecies with only minor differences in the patterns...

Oh and I still own all 3 of those beaut's in the pics! That is THE best pic of my polli...;)
