Would it be possible to sucessfully keep discus with a pH of around 7.8 and a medium to low hardness, as long as frequent water changes were performed?

i copuld only see a problem with wild caught discus . the atank bred are in my exp more hardy than neons :headbang2

You can always add some peat moss to your filter to soften the water and lower the ph a little.

Why so high though?

because that is my tap water. If i were to venture into discus, it would be with at least a 125 gallon tank, and i would want to perform at least 2 50% water changes per week, and i would hate to have to adjust the pH on it all if it wasn't necessary ;)

Thanks for the quick response. Sadly, i may not get discus for a while, because i do not think they would do well with my angels and tiger barbs. One day though:D

don't try adjusting PH, you'll only get spikes and run the risk of losing discus. They will do fine at those levels. Just make sure your KH is good and there isn't a large difference from tap to aged.....test your tap ph, then age some tap water for 24hrs and test. If there isn't a big swing then you can go straight tap water, otherwise you should age it in something with an air stone and heater before adding. There are many folks who keep and grow out beautiful discus at a ph of 8 and higher.
