i am looking into building a canopy for my 55 gallon... any inputs on what to do... i am on a cheap budget but would like it to look as nice as possible
I'm building one now. What type of lights are you looking to use? Are there any other bells and whistles. I have a sketch that I am working off of. if you want I can share it. Mine has enough room for two T5 fixtures from my local hardware store and a T8. I am still building but it seems as if all will go well.
i used 1 X 6 preprimed fingerjointed pine, and 4 blocks on the inside in each corner to hold it up on the tank, it covers the black rim, and around the top i put crown molding to make it look nice, painted the outside white and the inside flat black.

Underside:
Side Supports: (Made of stud at back corners and 1X's scrap)
Filter Pocket, Switch ports, Cord holes: (Made for three light banks 2 dual T5 Fixtures and one T8)
T5 Fixture to be mounted into hood. (This has been previously wired and removed to stain)
I still need to install the hinge. I picked a 48" from LHS for $10. I will most likely add some fans to the hood as well but I'm working on the cheapest way to do it. Probably just a couple of computer fans with a 12v transformer wired into the hood. Work is slow so it will probably be a couple of weeks before its done. I'm working about 5 minutes at a time due to a little one at home and family visiting for the next couple of weeks.
The entire hood is 50.5" long 16" Wide and 6" Deep. The original design sketch is below but I made some modifications and eliminated the rear supports (Weren't needed)
