With the prices of filter bags and other filter media going up, I’m looking for cheep but safe and productive filter media for my filters. I’m interested to see what you guys can come up with and I want to save some money.

Pot scrubbies. Lava rock for media. Nylon bags from dollar store if you want to replace filter bags. Instead of buying filter floss from pet store buy polyester filling from a fabric shop. I get a 72” diameter role for $40.

I used pot scrubbies from the dollar store, they are ok

Vent filters, though they get dirty in a day or two and have to be changed frequently.

And like the other commenter, lava rocks.

If your going to use anything just look at the packaging and read it for additives, you don’t want harmful chemicals going into your tank.

In my local supermarket (ASDA, i'm from the UK), they do what they call "smart price" ranges of various goods. One particular range of bedding they do are "smart price" pillows. They are £3 for two pillows. The filling is 100% polyester. They're totally rubbish as pillows, but the polyester filling is brilliant as a filter floss and it's dirt cheap and lasts for ages.

Just ensure the filling is 100% polyester though.
