Yup. Along with most other tangs, a high percentage of their diet is algaes.

What sort of algae do you have?

What size is your tank? There might be a better fish to do the job.

In the long run, an outbreak of nuisance micro alage is better solved with flow, lighting, and h2o quality changes.
 
250 gallon tank with dense crop of hair algae. it covers everything. it's actually my dentists tank, I'm just hired to clean it and give stocking opinions.

Best solution to hair algae is h2o quality...and lighting quality. A good amount of flow will also discourage it.

For algae eaters bristle mouth tangs are probably the best of the tangs...and for that tank size you could do a chevron...which is an awesome fish, and gets to a size where it could live comfortably in that tank. (Depending on dimensions I guess.)

The best HA eater I ever had was a lawnmower blenny though.
