Friend sold me his old 20g and stand for 15 bucks, going to use it for growing copepods and brine shrimp....do I need filtration? I can use either a sponge filter or some live rock.

Yes if you're try to raise them into adults. There are some sites for raising brine shrimp that you might want to check out:)

This is my way, there are many
I raise baby artemia in these bowl hatcheries

after the hatch is fed to fry, and apparently used up, I toss the old water and old eggs in an old upturned sky light outside, no filtration, or aeration

in a few weeks I sweep a net thru the water in the upturned skylight, and this is what comes out

after another few weeks I discard what's left, and start over with the leftovers from the bowl hatchery
