Where the Parachromis roam...
Went to my LFS the other day and saw a real strange looking fish,it really had the face of a dragon and the body of an eel,i was told they live in brakish water but would be ok in a ph of 7.0,have any of you guys ever heard of such a fish If so can i get any info on these guys,i am really interested in this fish but not sure if it is a good investment i never heard of a brakish water fish being able to live in regular water. Thanks :headbang2

It's not an eel at all, that's just a false LFS name for it.

They need brackish water and can be difficult to keep. Very peaceful fish though.

This site isn't always the best but this species it covers well: http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/gobyfish/dragon.php

ive had them an dident hav brackish water
they hide almost all the time..
they will eat small feeders but mostly just a bottom feeder

I loved having this fish, but will only thrive in brackish water. If they hide all the time in fresh water, then I think that explains it all. Mine was very friendly and personable. I am thinking about getting one, but they are so small when you can buy them, and I think the Toadfish would munch it in no time!

They technically can survive in freshwater for extended periods of time, but they typically don't last very long if kept permanently in freshwater.

They definitely prefer higher pH, above 7, that alone seems to make them happier. The one I've kept for almost 2 years is very active. He is not a swimmer by any means, but being out and about he is very interesting, he is worth the 6 months I put into getting him!
They do need brackish water, that alone done properly should give you the right pH, and the proper feeding should give you a BEAUTIFUL violet goby that spends a good amount of time hangin out waiting for you. Mine does, and it makes the whole tank worth it :)
