Hi all- I have a quick question about raises scales and what the early signs of dropsy are in an arowana- yesterday I came home to find my 6 month old silver had two scales on his left side that were raised up (I'm goin to get on a computer to upload a few pictures in a minute here); other then that, he has been fine. He's still eating, no more skittish than normal, and he is swimming properly (no bloating). I read my levels last night and everything seemed to be fine, I've done a 20% water change yeaterday, and am doing another 30% today. I have found some very limited information on treating this 'pine-cone' issue, and have raised the water temp to 82 from 80-81 in case it is bacterial.

He is about 18" long, in a 6'x2' (grow-out tank) with a juvenile Flowerhorn, two African cichlids, a Sailfin Pleco, and two lavender gourami. I am running a Penguin 400 and 280 as well. Any ideas on whether or not this may be symptoms of 'dropsy'? Or what the best cause of action would be?

to me it looks more like the aro got into a fight with a tankmate, since you have it with some aggressive fish. or it spooked and jumped into the top hitting those scales and they just have not come all the way off yet. especially because of the scuffs on the lower scale.

I was just really concerned because they look a bit transparent/swollen- I'm relatively new to arowana raising and normally his scales do come off completely leaving a darker spot or patch so it appears I may have jumped the gun a bit  Thanks so much for the insight ! I really appreciate it.

prob just an small scrap when it got spooked. just add some extra salt..give it couple weeks n it should heal back in no time

hey man the same thing happend to mine right befor i was gonna feed my tank he got a little to happy and jumped and hit the lid and messed up a few scales no worrys thow the heal quick :headbang2

It doesnt look like dropsy.. could be just a small fight.. check on how the scales heal in the next couple of days.. one of my aros had a bad case of dropsy.. i almost thought i'd lose him.. i treated the aro with doxycycline and lactic acid bacillus.. for about ten days.. and gradually all is well..

looks like it bumped to something .... dropsy occurs in whole body, make your fish looks like pineapple

haha true
