Hey guys Im setting up another 6 foot 125 gallon. Ive been looking at getting another Eheim canister. I have the classic 2213 already and i like it. I want to get the 2217. It is rated for up to 160 gallons but with such a low flow rate (264 gph) how can this be true? I love eheim and they make great filters but I think if you tried to filter a 6 foot tank with just the 2217 it would be insufficient. Wouldn't you have a bunch of dead spots, stagnant water, etc.? Or can you just put the intake at one end of the tank and the spray bar at the other end? I don't have much experience when it comes to canisters. Any help is appreciated. I don't want to spend a boatload filtering this tank.

The recommended tank sizes are pretty useless. I have a 2217 on a 75 gallon, and I'm thinking of adding a second one. Wouldn't be anywhere close to enough for a 125.

Exactly what I was thinking. Do you set yours up so the intake and outlet are at opposite ends of the tank?

From Eheims website:

2213 - 2215 - 2217
"classic external canister filters for aquarium sizes up to 600 l - tried and tested millions of times. A balanced pump output to canister volume ratio ensures optimum conditions in your aquarium."

Normally I don't believe manufacturers claims but when it comes to Eheim I sorta believe it...

they lie!, I have one I wouldn't filter more then a 40 gallon tank with it if it has larger fish in it(ie bigger tetras or dwarf goroumis).

I personally would not use only one 2217 on a 125G tank. But there are other factors to consider. What fish & quantity are you planning on having? Will the tank be planted? Any rock piles or other decor? There are too many variables to give you an exact answer with the info we have so far.

A 2217 can filter a 125 with a couple guppies :D. I had 3 on my 125, until I pulled one off and replaced it with an FX5. They are great filters, and can handle a lot when it comes to bio, but they don't move enough water to pick up all the crap. A 2217 along with 2 ac110's would do perfect for a 125 imo.....
