Very inspiring. I am desperately trying to find sand similar to that. I had it many years ago, but through one thing or another, I ended up getting rid of it a while back and now I want it again. :(

Anyway, this thread has inspired me to tack up a few verticals on my 375g in wall project...

Wow thank you for the kind words, that mean allot coming from you Clay! I can't wait to see what you do with your 375g. I have never done an in-wall tank and want to really bad! (any advice?)

I wish you were closer, I have bags and bags of this sand. It's not cheap, $0.50 per LBS through my LFS but I support my local economy and don't mind paying the markeup

Thanks bro ;) some progress for you guys.

aclockworkorange decided he wanted to order a grey colored background so he told me to hang onto this one. My sons and I spend allot of time together and I thought this would make a nice project with them and good practice for me with the big backgrounds. My father gave me his 10 gallon a little while back that he used for koi fry. This is a 3rd generation tank, my dad, me and my boys. :D

Only a true MFK'er would pimp a 10 gallon

The basic idea, a small tank I can incorporate plants into with a nice background.

I took a stash of rocks from my father pond last time we were down there so I will use a few of these as well.

1004.JPG

The background closeup. I like the rock pattern in this on.

We got the tank cleaned up yesterday and ready to install. :headbang2

P1010312.JPG

The silicone I used. I figured since it was a small application, I would use a small tube. < stupid idea......... :irked: It was so hard to squeeze the silicone out of the tube I would have been better off with GE and the silicone gun like I always do. Lesson learned. I'm glad I started with a small background.

P1010313.JPG

My 7 y/o hamming it up for the camera. He helped me measure everything out. The thinline backgrounds are scored on the back to make it easier for a clean cut. Killer idea and it did make it allot easier. Like coloring in the lines lol..

The score marks close up. You can see the pattern if you click on the pics. Thery a high rez so you can zoom waay in.

P1010318.JPG

first 3D background cut outside, I cut it from behind with a hack saw and the fronts side looks perfect, no snag marks or anything. I tested using masking tape on some scrap pieces and I would not recommend using marking tape on these backgrounds. You could never tell from looking at it but it does remove some of the surface paint.

More pics in a sec... ;)

A quick test fit to see how it looks. I like it allot.

P1010331.JPG

Not even National Geographic photographers have managed to catch a picture of two boys smailing at the same time and not choking one another... They were argueing over who gets to try on the rock cave as a hat... :screwy:and the winner is....

P1010336.JPG

This is the elusive phenomenon know as a 13 y/o boy smiling and not "acting cool" for the girls that aren't here lol.. Watch out ladies..!

P1010338.JPG

Silicone from back through the back of the tank. I probably could have used a little more.

P1010345.JPG

I descided to take some scrap pieces and use those on the back. You can't see it in this pic but I sanded the two edges so they lined up to each other.

P1010346.JPG

This is my pit/lab mix "Drama" watching us work. Normally she hangs out with me when working on my tanks. She gave me the silent treatment the entire night for not inviting her out there.. Such a drama queen.. :nilly:

P1010348.JPG

I cut down the hieght on the main background so it sat directly in front of the two scrap pieces. The front panel acts like the wall of a sump only fully submerged. The chamber right behind it is were I stash the heater, the filter intake and a layer of media for the plants to propagate into.

P1010351.JPG

I have never seen anyone mount a background like this before and wanted to push the envelop a little. :D I actually really like it.

P1010353.JPG

I havent decided on it I want to leave it open top of not but we'll see after it dries. I am going to keep a m/f pair of Apistogramma Borellii. None the less was a fun project to work on with my boys. They are good kids.

My strategy is to just never go cichlids. I have that job interview at the cichlid exchange tomorrow... maybe this strategy is not going to work so well.

GL on the interview bro. At least you won't have to worry about keeping SA's, I got the "hording" part handled :D
