has anyone here successfully dosed their tank with erythromycin to remove blue green algae? were there any problems with any fish? although i have heard that it does not affect the beneficial bacteria, but have there been any bad experiences?

Thanks,
Brandon

Yes, It will kill cyano bacteria. I had no adverse reactions.

yes I've used the stuff. I got it in tablets and used the recommended dosage, did a major water change the next day, did another dose, and another water change. the package recommended using it for about a week or so but I just played it by eye and soon the bacteria was gone!
I also found that the bacteria would come off and on, especially if I didn't do regular maintanence on the aquarium. all you need to do for a tiny bit is put about 1/4 the recommended dose and it usually cleares up within a day or two.

Isn't that Baytril? I have used it on hamsters, guinea pigs, beardies, leopard geckos, but never on algae. How would I go about doing this? BTW, that stuff is expensive.

EDIT, I was thinkging about Enroflaxin, OOPS. Erythromycin is what's in my acne medicine.

Ok i just finished my treatment and final 50% w/c. I also put in a bag of carbon to remove any straggler meds.

No ammonia, no nitrites, no fish loss (not even the guppy fry that i can't get out), no cloudiness, no BGA, no nothing.

I guess I had a successful trip. I'd recommend this procedure, just make sure to suck out all the BGA after the first day.

Brandon,

Please describe your treatment in detail (source of erythromycin, dose, dosing intervals, total duration of treatment etc.) so that other members can benefit from your positive experience

I used Mardel brand Maracyn. It is a fast dissolving erythromycin powder in convenient 200 mg packs. The recommended dose is 200 mg per 10 gallons for 5 days. I removed all carbon and turned off my UV sterilizer. I dosed 4 packages a day each evening after feeding for 5 days in my 55. After the first 24 hours, I vaccuumed my sand substrate to remove all visible BGA. This removed approximately 5 gallons of water, so I added another package of erythromycin. Each day, I thoroughly stirred my substrate to ensure that no BGA could escape treatment. On day two of the treatment, my sand took on a blue-green sheen--as if the BGA were trying to return, but it failed miserably. By day three, it was completely gone. On day six, I did a 50% water change and added carbon. As of today, everything is healthy and normal.

I tested daily for ammonia, nitrate and ph. There was never any ammonia or nitrate and the ph remained at its normal value of about 6.8. I experienced no fish death or abnormal fish behavior during the course of the treatment. I found this treatment highly safe and effective. However, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and ymmv.
