I don't keep many American cichlids anymore but I've been looking for some Hypsophrys nicaraguense. Mr. Rapps had Nics on his list so when I was ordering a group of them I decided I had to see one of these ornatus in the flesh..

I'm glad I did, neat fish

beautiful fish

are you keeping it with other fish? how is the temperament?
Thanks, keeping it with growout groups of Hypsophrys nicaraguense, Paretroplus menarambo and Geophagus altifrons...it is the largest fish in the tank and is the dominant fish.

Not shy, it begs when it sees me...compared to some other Northern South American fish...festae or umbees of a similar size for example, it could be considered bold.

Beautiful fish! The color is stunning.
Thank you, base color is getting more yellow everyday, seems to be settling in nicely

Great looking fish, I'd love to have one or two but the cost is some what prohibitive.

Beautiful Ornatus! Glad to see some of pics of these fishes. I too would love to get some of these but waiting for the right prices :)

Very nice pick up. They look really good. I might have to get some of these. What would you compare these to as in temperament, personality? Do You have other tankmates

Thanks, yeah they're pretty nice looking fish, my flash tends to wash some of the blue spots out, they look better in person

Thanks, I'm sure we'll all be seeing more and more pics of these guys, pretty cool to see them in the hobby

Thanks, mine reminds me of a green terror personality wise, seems more interested in food than anything else. Not real aggressive yet, hopefully stays that way but it's only in the 3 to 3.5" range now so we'll see as it grows (see above for tankmates)

It's a really good looking fish. Sounds like it already has some personality as well. Congrats on the nice pickup.
Thanks, yep, cool fish...I was expecting something different personality wise, not nearly as outgoing as it turned out to be. Whenever it can see me it is front and center begging but when it doesn't know I'm watching it has a tendency to stick close to some kind of cover, suppose that shouldn't be surprising since it is still a young fish.
