Fall fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's one I've never heard of... Another name for the fish perhaps?

I have never kept them but according to the book "American Aquarium Fishes" by Robert J. Goldstein they avoid temps. above the high 70's. They are found in clear slow moving streams and rivers and on occasion in lakes. That's about all the book said, everything else written on the species was about breeding. I would assume based on their environment that they could survive in the right pond conditions and if they are anything like the closely related creek chub they are very hardy and will take most food stuff offered.

thanks guys for the info. These things are real common in my area. We call them creek tarpon, they do put up a good fight. They seem to be aggressive to smaller minnows have caught them on creek chubs. Just thought they might be a cool alternative to orfs.

Yeah Stonecat I catch them in the Yellow Breeches when I'm trout fishing. Pretty fish too. But as mentioned, they need cold, fast moving water. I always caught them near turbid water and "Falls".

vicious,
Have you ever caught one in the river? They get huge in there, was out in oct. fishing with minnows and caught on that was 18 inch if not more, they were in with a large school of bass my dad and i caught probally 50 fish that day i would say 20 of them were fallfish. In the fall they breed and get the horns on their heads just like creek chubs.

When you say the river you mean the Susquhanna, right? Yeah I've only fished in there twice. Caught lots of rock bass and SMB. The Small Mouths in that river get huge! The biggest fall fish I ever caught was only about 10 inches or so.
