Hi Everyone,

I'm in a bit of a predicament, I have a 18" Channa Micropeltes (Giant red snakehead) and it feeds fine on live foods, I.e goldfish etc, now I know this can lead to Viatmin B1 deficiencies etc but I just can't get him to eat anything dead... I've tried prawns, muscles, squid, beef heart, lance fish... but he just ignores it and lets it sink to the bottom... Now the question is, if I just refuse to feed him live and keep putting dead food in, is he going to end up eating the dead food, or will he just starve himself to death?

Thanks for any help.

Sam

I don't think he'll starve to death he just wants it his way,and I think by you giving in makes him know it's his way, your the owner you feed him what you want not the other way around now if it's a diff. Fish like my red tail cuda that's a diff story lol

Yeah this was my thinking... but how long do I leave it before I get worried, I.E how long can he go without eating before it gets dangerous?

Hi,,

no worry, its a long way to starve a snakehead to death !

i tried to get a pair of stewartii to eat pellets, caus the winter was cold, and the baitshops and LFS coudnt provide good food (wo´rms and insects) so i tried pellets. The fish tried but spit out.
So every day i threw five pellets into the tank, and after an hour i removed five pellets. The fish ignored the food, knowing its not their favourite food. After nearly FOUR weeks They started to eat the pellets, and after three days they could not await to get this food.

The fish did not look more slender than before the diet !

I have 3 giant snakeheads ,2 are apx a foot long ,the other 10 inches and none of them will eat anything that is not moving, goldfish and minnows no problem, but they wont even touch dead ones.I have heard that not feeding them for a week or so and then trying dead feeding might start them on feeding on other things other than live prey.I have easy access to live food so it does not worry me . These are just incredible fish..
