I've been following the King of DIY on youtube for awhile now and realized he feeds his fish a mixture of raw shrimp from the grocery store and scallops. I've been incorporating raw shrimp in my juvenile jack dempsey's diet as a protein supplement along with pellets. Anybody have insight on the long term effects of feeding raw grocery store bought shrimp?

Do you mean fresh or frozen raw shrimp? Fresh is better.

Do you mean exclusively or with a lot of other foods? With a lot of other foods is better.

Imo, feeding frozen raw shrimp exclusively is not going to be a good diet for most if any fish. Just an opinion, not something I saw in a study or anything. If you are determined to use frozen raw shrimp be sure to add a LOT of high quality pellets and in some cases fresh veggies as well.

I feed almost exclusively pellets. Treats are usually freeze dried products such as krill or bloodworms. On occasion I will feed frozen shrimp, fresh shrimp, or tilapia fillet but imo without feeding the entire(head on in shell)shrimp or entire fish it is probably lacking as a complete source of nutrition. Pellets soaked in vita chem seem to help entice finicky eaters.

I don't think there is any danger from feeding shrimp from the grocery store as long as it is not pre cooked with seasoning. Even the" fresh" shrimp at most chains comes in frozen and is thawed for the seafood case so it should be safe as far as any pathogens go.

Thiaminase is a non issue if one supplements with B1 a few times a week, or feeds pellets as the main staple along with food stuffs that may contain thiaminase. It's all about balance. On a personal note I don't feel there is any need to supplement high quality pellets.

I agree about the "lack" of need to supplement the pellets.
Any time you use a raw aquatic product, there is a chance (slim though it may be) that you can introduce a disease causing phage.
Grocery store shrimp, Tilapia, or any seafood can be tainted with viruses, or bacteria that would be normally cooked away for human use, but fed raw, to fish can be introduced to your system.
And how would you know? sometimes it takes weeks or even longer for some vectors to multiply into an infectious dose

Thanks for the input guys. So the main food Ive been feeding are the Marineland Color Enhancing Tropical Flakes(44% protein from peruvian anchovies). I know it says flakes but they're more of a compressed flattened disc. Should I continue feeding my cichlid this or are there better choices out there?

Another option is to peel peas and use a food processor for raw shrimp and peeled peas and then use Knox gelatin to make it into frozen cubes you cut I make it for my JD and feed it 2 times and day I thaw it in a little cup it sinks as well…… I did a extra thick gelatin mix as well it stays together as well it doesn’t break apart but I also added just enough gelatin to where my mix was still thick ….. any questions like portioned and how I did it you can ask I can give you a recipe that last 1 6in JD a month fed 2 times a day
