Is it safe to feed freshwater fish chunks of saltwater fish? I’ve done so here and there in the past but recently caught a bunch of snapper and mahi and set aside some scrap pieces for food, if it’s safe. And if so, how often? I’ve also been feeding little pieces of saltwater shrimp about every other week and was wondering how safe that is too

Fish:
2 bichirs
2 ropefish
1 half banded spiny eel
1 fat sleeper goby
3 butterflyfish
5 Chirax gibbosus

I feed fish caught in the Pacific off the coast of Panama to my cichlids, gobies and other species fairly regularly.
I figure the chance of disease transfer is quite low, salt to fresh. Much lower than for those that but cheap feeders, or wild caught bait store minnows
These are usually trimmings from fish I buy from local fishermen for myself, and include everything from spiny lobster roe, to shrimp carcasses, to Chilean sea bass, to needlefish.
There is always a chance of of spreading certain viruses, but my fish are wild caught mostly by me, so its all about risk management for me, and if things go south, I don't cry over spilled milk, .

Awesome thank you

Great thread by Duanes

Also consider freezing which can help eliminate parasites

One caveat....there are certain pests that are not eliminated by freezing.
There are Parasites from northern waters that have dormant stages that transcend freezing.

And because there are no LFSs on the island where I live, I find it necessary to use salt water trimmings and fillets more than I would if I had easier access to well prepared foods.
