Freshwater
I know the Philippines are known mainly for the saltwater species that surround the islands, but are there any freshwater fish native species that would do well in aquaria?
I grew up in N. Luzon and watched waterways and rivers go polluted over time. And with all the non-native fish introduced for agricultural purposes, I'm curious if there are still interesting fish to keep, native from the area. I know of some gobies/gouramis supposedly native from the area, but many of these fishes are basically native to most of SE Asia.
It would be great to learn more if anyone has had any prior experience.

Kudos to anyone with any info.

I found this if anyone's curious on a similar discussion.

Butis butis are cool little gobies you should check out. They're called crazyfish for a reason. There are also;

Pink-lipped morays
White dotted grouper
Freshwater morays
Beady pipefish
Quoy's garfish
Freshwater snapper (big!)
Daggertooth pike conger
Largescale archerfish
Banded Archerfish

Most fish from the Philippines are brackish.

Somebody else recently asked about this, here's a few I found.

Climbing Perch
(anabas testudineus)
(probably some other gouramis as well)

Salmontail Catfish
(big)

Wrestling Halfbeaks

Rasboras
Spotted Barb
(There are some spotted barbs and rasborras unique to the Philippines)
(These two might go together?)

Green Spotted Puffer

Asian Arowana
(Not certain which type.)

Snakeheads
(Not certain which type.)

i think freshwater snappers are brackish. the most common in the philippines are climbing perch and gouramis.

And let's not forget "Pandaka pygmaea" (the Pygmy goby) from Palawan. Also, Sinigang na Bangus and Daiing Bangus are two of my personal favorites....but I guess that's a different subject.

lol. i'm lookng around for some butis butis now =)

When I was younger when the the rice fields would be flooded these fish-(catfish?) would be found roaming in and out of the water. very cool experience.

if you live outside the Philippines it may be hard to set-up a Filipino Lake/River biotope since not much native and endemic freshwater fish is exported out of the Philippines. The primary reason being freshwater fish in the philippines is dull.

The true freshwater fishes found in the philippines are primarily half-beaks and gobies. The climbing perch anabas testudinues and the snakehead Channa striata is also abundant throughout the islands. There are rasboras and barbs in the Philippines but this are limited to Mindanao, Palawan and Mindoro. There is also an endemic ricefish found in Northern Luzon.

Gouramis are introduced and not native. There is no scientific record of Asian Arowanas in Philippine waters, at least if you consult Albert Herre's Checklist of Philippine Fishes. There are no native loaches as well.

on lake lanao there are a LOT of endemic fishes there, mostly barbs but sadly because of the introduction of tilapias and janitors and the destruction of the surrounding forests most of them will become extict unless something will be done but our crap of a government wont do anything about it...

butia butis is a kind of perch i think....and wow youre lucky to experience that kind of thing i grew up in quezon city and later moved to paranaque and now im in laguna and the waters there are very polluted. now im trying to acquire the different kinds of climbing perch or locally known as "puyo" i have 5 from antipolo and they are quite different from the puyos from iloilo and im now trying to find the ones from laguna..
