Can you operate a canister filter next to a tank instead of below it? In the FX5 video it said it had to be 8" below the tank... was wondering about a fluval 204.

My FX5 is beside my 200 gallon because I have no room below with the sump and pumps and I have no problems at all.

Instruction manual for FX5 says 7.8" below the tanks waterline. I've seen these work sitting next to a tank that was sitting on the floor. The FX5 has the pump at the bottom of the canister though. Most canisters the pump is at or near the top and work very ineffectively like this. The canister filter rely on gravity to bring and fill the can with water and then it is pumped back to the tank by the pump.

I would doubt that your 204 will work sittng next to your tank, that is assuming your tank is under 24" tall.

If you can't place it under, I would go with HOB. Get an AC110.
