Hello cichild keepers, I have a 50 gallon tank stocked with 5 zebra danios and 4 rainbow cichilds. I have seen at least one pair of rainbow lay eggs but when they become wigglelers they seem to get eaten after two days. The other two can swim all around the aquarium most of the time but when the pair see them they get confronted and nudge to the right side of the tank. These confrontation aren't very aggressive, just sort of pushing and flaring.
There are two flat stones at each side of the tank (just in case i I got two pairs) and a small planter in the middle. (The pair had eggs in the left stone and in the planter).
Anayways, I've been wanting to put at least a pair of firemouths in there but I would need you guys opinion depending on the shocking and agression level of my previous and future fish.
I know both species are agressive once breeding, specially the firemouths, but would this stocking work in a 30" by 19" base ? I won't do it if any of the fish run a risk of injury or death by the two pairs stressing them out.
Any opinions are welcomed and thank you for your time.

My advice would be that a 30x19 is going to be too small for two pairs and they will probably clash. I think a lone firemouth would be a better bet. The rainbows are pretty mellow luckily, any other cichlid I would say keep alone in that size tank. Really an odd footprint, not ideal for cichlids.

I didn't measure it and went with an estimated but I just did, and the real measures of the entire tank are L= 36", W= 19", H= 18". I thought a longer and wider tank would provide a bigger ground space for cichilds?
Thanks for your comment Gourami Swami.
Does anyone have experience with both Firemouths and Rainbow pair in one tank?
Feel free comment and give more advice on this topic.

I wouldn’t add a meeki, I’m not a big fan of zebra danios but if that’s your thing I’d just add a few more of those if you feel lacking in your tank.

Two pairs will eventually beat each other up in that tank, perhaps if it was one male and two females it might not be bad.

I’d just let it be how it is and see how things go, if your tank has you unsatisfied. I find it helps to re-scape it, maybe get some new plants or decorations. Also the more plants and sight brakes the less the two pairs will duke it out. Although it doesn’t solve it always.

Good luck
