First Time Big Fish

I'm posting this thread here since I have an interest in the Central and South American Cichlids but I'm open to all fishy suggestions.
I started a thread over 2 years ago that was discussing a solo fish for a 55 gallon! However I was unable to set up this tank due to some setbacks which have been recently resolved. I have also upgraded to a 90 gallon tank since then. My hopes is to have a few live plants like java moss and fern and maybe some driftwood in the tank and a sand substrate.
So now to the fun part, lets talk fish! What would the community recommend for a first large fish in a 90 gallon tank with a couple of hardy plants?
 
Never kept any plants but I hear most of the fish from those areas dig up plants.

I love Texas cichlids. That's my recommendation but he does dig a lot in my tank.
 
Would a Texas be ok digging in the sand? Ya i guessed many of the larger fish would like to move stuff about in the tank that is why I choose the hardy plants.

I think a big cichlid is more likely to just tear the plants up than move them.

I'll always advocate for keeping a Midas/red devil as a wet pet. They're awesome.

LOTS of fish to choose from. Just go look at youtube videos of fish, and one will captivate you. Trimac, Zonatus, Midas, Argeneta, Bifasciatus, Regani, Carpintis, Severum, Green Terror. Just find a fish you really like and drop him in there.

If he ougrows the tank, get him a bigger one.

Yeah I've had so many Texas and all my fish play with the sand. Mine dig pits my red devil who started breeding moved half my sand to the other side then killed everyone lol

my larger wet pets destroy even the fake plants I've tried.
 
Thanks for all the posts everyone! While looking at images I came across this Texas Cichlid. Can someone identify what type of Texas it is? I like how it has the redish/yellowy/orange base with greeny/blue scales. Not to mention my LFS has several Flower Horns and Texas Cichlids so I am sure they could find me one like it.
