My tanks inhabitants include: giant danios, glow tetras, tinfoil barb, gouramis, 2 small stingrays. Tank parameters are as follows: ammonia nitrite and nitrate 0, pH 7.0, temp 79. The giant danios eyes have been turning red and then they die. The ones that have died have no sign of being picked at or anything else physically wrong with them. The rest of the fish are all acting fine, look fine and eating well. Places I have researched suggest that the red eyes could be a sign of poor water quality....as you can see, this isn't the issue. Any ideas what this could be? And are the rest of my fish in any danger? I would appreciate any help as quickly as possible

How long has the tank been running? Reason i ask is, it's not
Possible to have 0 nitrates unless the tank is heavily planted. Redness is typically an indication of ammonia poisoning. What test kit are you using and what's the expiration date?

no idea the expiration date....there isn't one on it. Its the API freshwater master test kit. There are no plants in the tank. Sometimes the nitrate is 0 and sometime a tad over. Right now its reading zero. The tank has been running for several months. Im running 2 canister filters. One with ceramic rings. The other holds ceramic rings, carbon, bio balls, filter pads and polishing pads.

Forgot to add that we do a 10% water change daily (split into 2 separate water changes....one in the morning and one at night. A total of 10%). How long are the test kits usually good for? Have had this one about a year

If you use a declorinator at water changes and check the water too soon it can result in your reading being off. I would test the water before the WC to get a more accurate reading. This can be caused by an ammonia spike or a baterial infection. Lets get some good numbers to start with and go from there. You can also get some water tested at your LFS to make sure the reading are correct. A close clear picture would also be helpful.

Also with the nitrate kit you need to shake the every living crud out of it. Especially bottle 2. In fact not just shaking it shaking and tapping/smacking it on your hand is recommended and do that for a good solid couple minutes before adding bottle 2. Be sure to follow the directions to the tee. Agree with Tom. Sounds like water condition or bacterial

We always test the water before changes....and the 2nd bottle of nitrate does get shaked like crazy before use. We follow the directions exactly. Its possible its the test kit....leaving to get a new one soon. Will post results from that when we get back home with it. What kind of pics are you asking for? The fish with the eyes like that....or the test results?

I've had fish my entire life....ranging from saltwater to freshwater......which is why this is so frustrating to me cuz I've never had this specific issue with any of them.

It's not a very common symptom. A close clear pic of the eye would be hlepful.

Edit: when you test the water if you could test GH it will be helpful in choosing the correct med if it becomes necessary.

Well the test kit was bad.....the new kit reads as follows...ammonia .5, nitrite 0, nitrate 5. Did a 20% water change. I will post a pic if another fish dies...too hard to snap a clear pic of a small fish that's really skiddish. Its only happening to the giant danios and hopefully it doesn't spread to the rays. They are my biggest concern right now.
