Hi,

So I have read a few times that people believe that air fresheners can kill fish.

I am not sure I entirely believe this rumor (Obviously contaminated water will harm fish) but I wanted to see what others thought.

I have a fish tank at the farthest wall.

But I also have a dog and would love to get something to mask the dog smell (I regularly clean, carpet wash, vacuum and bath the dog)

So I have been wanting to use something to freshen it up.

If I put an air freshener say withing 4-5 feet of the 75 Us Gallon tank. Am I really looking at a problem?

If so what if It was atleast 12 feet away? Still a problem?

Its not worth the risk. The odor mask things are not even healthy for humans to breathe. If you choose to anyways use alot of carbon and have tons of surface agitation but there is no way it could be healthy for the fish at all to introduce sprays into their environment. Thats why its a good idea to keep tanks out of the kitchen. Even if you have a tight lid on the tank an air pump still takes in passive air and pumps it in your tank.
(rant over) Try opening windows instead bro :)

If the chemical gets into the water then it will surly kill your fishes it happened to a friend of mine. His mom sprayed febreeze around the house and later at night all his fish died. 1x 7" HBRTG, 1x 8" motoro sting, 2x 6" Indo tiger, 1x 6" flagtail and 3x 6" bichirs (Endli and Ornate)

If you pan to spray, just make sure your tank is well cover and don't spray from above that levels your top glass. Just pray low.

Never really thought about it before. Look at the bottom left corner of this picture right next to the stand. Yup, Glade plug-in. I've not noticed any adverse affects to the fish. It's been there since day 1. Well it gets replaced when needed. :)

Lynnwood, Washington what!
It's gotta depend on the type of air freshener is my guess. Would love to know what's safe.

Well I planned to use a plug in type. There are all natural chemical free products out there. I would be happy to use those on a low setting just to slightly remove the dog smell.

I am not planning to use a spray at all.

its not an immediate problem with the odd accident. my wife sprayed right next to my tank and i didnt lose one fish. i wouldnt recommend it everyday though. we use glade plug ins and we have run it a few feet away from the tank with no problems. but i dont use an air pump (meaning no air gets pumped directly into the water), my spray bar agitates my waters surface and i have a tight lid.

It's very obivious that we're talking about two different kind of air fresheners. The spray kind and the non spray kind. Having an air freshener next to your tank will not adversely effect the fish just as standing next to your fish tank while wearing deodorant will not effect them. Spraying air freshening sprays will effect your fish just like dunking your deodorant stick in your tank will effect them. This is common sense.

I burn scented candles all the time in my apartment, never have seen any ill effects on my tanks.

I would never use anything that sprays into the air, I also would never use incense which could be to strong.
