I believe that Taeniurus is smaller than Insignis (not too sure though). Also, spots on Taeniurus will remain as the fish grows while the spots will fade on an Insignis.

^^This is what I have read also.

As far as Yellow or Red tails, I think this may just be colour morphs of the same species.

I read one will max out at 8 inches not sure which one. This one is harder to find. I beleive it has yellow in its tail. The other one which is what most shop carry is the red tail I beleive. It can get to 20 inches. Saw one that big at Toledo Zoo. Had one in my tank get to 15 inches before I traded him for a pleco to someone.

red is common but i think it looks better. yellow looks pale and i haven't seen anything huge with the yellow one. maybe because of it's rarity? nevertheless i'll go for the red one.

Its aSemaprochilodus insignis. I've had the honor of keeping both Semaprochilodus taeniurus and Semaprochilodus insignis. I currently have a Semaprochilodus insignis. They both act the same, and both will look cute. My guy looks sort of like yours.
