Fluval FX4 Stopped Working

Hi all

I have a Fluval FX4 on my 125 gallon tank. For some reason, it has just stopped working. If I unplug it and plug it back in, it will start, and then stop, but not start back up (I know it can sometimes stop to let air escape).

Anyone had this issue? I’m confused because it will run for a minute.

I do have a wave maker, so there is agitation and air exchange.
Thanks

it had started again, and now it has shut off again. It’s been on the tank for four years. Regular maintenance every few months per the Fluval manual.

This same thing happened to my FX6 two years ago. I had to replace the motor unit and it has been running fine since. I purchased mine from amazon.com but I don't see the FX4 motor there. Here is the link to the FX4 motor unit on Fluval Aquatics website if you want to give it a try.

Super easy to replace.

Quick question - I am just re-thinking my filter options, if I need to replace that part. I live in a condo so sometimes cleaning and maintaining the FX4 isn't the easiest (for example, the tubes are nearly impossible to change that run filter to tank)

If it is that part that needs to be replaced, I may get a Fluval/Aquaclear 110, or two of them - this would be easier to access and clean, just where I am.

Would this work equally as well filtration wise as the FX4?

I'm not familiar with that filter as I've only used sumps/canisters for many years now. Aquaclear 110 says it's rated for 500gph so I would definitely get two of them for a 125gal, which is also good for redundancy in case one craps out. Unless your bioload is too high like ex/ 2 full grown Oscars plus tank mates then I suppose two of those might work. Maybe someone else with more experience with this will also chime in.

It's been awhile since i used an ac110, i think you'd be fine with a couple of them for mechanical filtration, but not sure if the biological filtration would be the same, less room for media if i recall correctly. In my old tank i used a HOB for cleaning the water and a submersible cascade filter that i emptied the guts out and put cramic rings in for bio filter, just pumped water through the biomedia all the time. Every couple of months i'd open it and rinse the rings in old tank water during water changes.

I ran two 110's on my 6ft 125gal Amphilophus Saggitae tank with no issues. Just don't clean both filters in the same week. Rinse the sponge thoroughly and swish the bio-rings in some uses tank water to get the big gunk off.
Like you I was replacing FX4s due to the difficulty of cleaning them as compared to a 110.
