Got this quartet from Rapps Jan 2018 at about 3"-4". In 5 months with us they are about 6"-8". Easy and fun carp. They are in a 240 gal carp grow out tank and are planned to go into the 25,000 gal when they reach 10"-12".

EUREKA! Probarbus labeamajor. I've seen many videos of this fish, never knowing what their name was. Finally I get to put a name to the beautiful face. Thanks for that.

Unfortunately though, a quick search tells me these fish are true monsters, growing to over a metre long. I would have got a couple for my new 300g, not now!

This is the video of them getting transferred into the 25,000 gal carp exhibit.

This was the first attempt. It was unsuccessful because the various mahseer decided the esoks were their new chew toys (they didn't touch the lemon fin barb, nor the small scale mud carp though), so I had to snorkel in there and catch them a few hours later and place them back in the same 240 gal.

A month later or two, when all the gnawed out scales grew back and the damage healed and more importantly when I had realized that mahseers simply needed to be fed more and then they left the tank mates alone, I tried the same again (wasn't filmed) and this time it has been a resounding success.

The esoks have been doing very well there and feeding enviably and growing.

Hey Viktor, sorry for reviving an old thread but as you know I love cyprinids so I had to :) Have you noticed any significant differences between this species and P. Jullieni? Fishbase lists only minor morphological differences but I do wonder whether there are differences in growth rate, behaviour etc.

1.5 year update. The quartet has been doing well in the 25K. Enviable appetite as with most carp. I estimate they are 18"-22" now. Hard-shoaling fish, almost always in the vicinity of each other. Hard to take good pics of them in the large dark pond with glare off the front glass facing outdoors, so some poor ones:

The 4 esoks have been doing well. Now about 4.5 years old. Seem to have slowed down growing since a year ago, still at 20"-24".

The video is dedicated to a different subject but the esoks photobomb the video plenty:
