granite falls washington
i recently bought 3 freshwater flounder but i have never seen them eat. i was told to feed them ghost shrimp and bloodworms. they seem to be active and healthy so im not too worried yet. any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure that all flounders need some salt so i would add some as for the exact density they need i don't know

Try black worms and brine shrimp if they won't eat blood worms and i wouldn't expect them to eat ghost shrimp unless they are big or unless the ghost shrimp are very small

I would feed smaller food than ghost shrimp, preerably live. I've always had problems with these as they are not the easiest species to keep. I always did better when they were in brackish

I've kept them in pure fresh for up to three years and up to 10" long, they really do seem to do best with live food, Daphnia magna is my live food of choice but live black worms are eaten like crazy too. I'm not sure but I think that living in pure fresh causes them to need more food, at least mine ate like crazy on live food but were never all that good about eating dead stuff. Keeping them on dead stuff always seemed to mean very few lived. The do have problems competing with other fish for dead food but become aggressive feeders with live food. Adults do indeed need salt water, at about two to three years and 10" they die with out a marine set up.

I keep mine in a brackish tank and have no problem getting them to eat bloodworms, squid, and brine shrimp- all thawed. Do you have anything else in the tank that may spook or out compete them for food? They don't come to the surface of the sand if they don't feel secure. My tank is in the bedroom and not exposed to much disturbance. My flounder will actually come to the corner where they get fed first thing in the morning (you could try feeding at lights out too). Try garlic on the food too- it works for some of my more picky eaters.

i have two redline sharks with them and a clown loach, but my other fish dont seem to bother them at all. thanks for the advice
