I just took some rocks out of a local creek and put them in my tank. They're slate, but they've worked fine, no problems or anything.

Lace rock and lava rock are benificial for freshwater tanks. you can find them at most LFS's

and both will raise your hardness, which isn't a problem if you're ok with it. Can't tell on the 1st pic, but the second is Texas Holey Rock, looks great, but can be expensive. Go to a stoneyard and see what they have, much cheaper then aquarium stores (even garden/landscaping centers work). See if they'll let you take some samples to test/see how they look in the aquarium.

the first pic is just a type of granite
the second is a mix of calcium based rocks like sandstone and THR

most of the bulk rock you'll find in a good LFS would be around $2-3 a pound
online will be cheaper, but of course shipping rocks isn't cheap...

im assuming you want some kind of calcium rock for an african cichlid tank yeah?
if you scrounge around online for people selling their SW live rock or afican cichlid tank rock you can get alot for a little...
some people sell 200 pounds of rock for like $50 sometimes

ebay craigslist pretty much any auction sight..
