As long as your fish feel secure, are large enough and are well fed they will spawn. A large tank and cave helps with spawning but the females also need places to sit out when holding as the other females will harass them. I usually use large half flowerpot caves at each end of the tank with an empty central area for fish interaction and feeding. I keep Frontosa species tanks since I am specifically breeding. Some people place a flat raised rock so the male can perch on it and see all around to know he is secure but I dont. Some people keep the tank half covered and reduce foot trafffic around the tank. They can be flighty fish and dont like sudden surprises. Since I do want fry, I rob eggs a day after spawning and artificially hatch in glass egg tumblers. Frontie eggs are large and very delicate for first 10 days so I use the same hatchers as for Arowana which also have huge eggs. I prefer to hatch because i find letting females hold naturally greatly reduces my fry numbers and females lose a lot of condition and my next breeding cycle is delayed. Hatching frontie eggs has a large learning curve so this may not be best for you. The larger and older your females, the more fry and confident she will be at breeding. My most productive females are about 10-12 years old.

My fish are used to a spawn cycle so I can trigger with a fast then a generous food cycle (prawns and earthworms) and then large water change. I deliberately withhold feed and waterchange until I want to trigger the spawn to make the difference more significant. Females will generally spawn within a few days of each other. On one of my colonies I need to keep a small insignificant male to make the dominant male less lazy.

I think there are specific Frontosa forums online if you want a lot more detail.

that was just fine i gthink my problem is that i have to much traffic in the tank and maybe thats why they havent spawned yet because i bought all my big fish from basically the same guy and he said that all of them have laid eggs and and had living frys but they were also in a bigger facility as he had them in a big rubber maid i dont know all of my other fish are breeding and i just cant trigger the fronts ive tried the temp trick and the heavy feeding and 80% water change lol im running out of ideas anyway these are my fronts

I don't have any experience breeding frontosa, or any fish for that matter (yet), but for starters I would remove all your other species of fish that are in there with them, especially the zebra, and barred midas which are way too aggressive and distractive I would think.

thanks for the advice ill try that////the zebra isnt bad but those midas they are wicked

Your fish are all still quite young. Even when female Frontosa are sexually mature, they need a few years to start producing well and confidently. When your females start eating your angels you will be getting close to a good size.

I would change to a much smaller gravel size too. They will pick up gravel when spawning and even mouth brood some of it when its of a similar size to eggs which of course damages the fragile eggs. Frontosa eggs are around 5mm oval and pale grey-browny-white so the same sizes and colours of some of your gravel.

all my bigger fronts are said to be proven breeders2 diff trio's a burundi 1-2 and a nangu1-2 and the little ones are some burundi just to have a bigger selection for my males to pick on
