I read that frontosas grow slowly. But about how fast do they grow? How big will they be after about 1 year?

I just started with my current colony, my third that I've had over the years. I find that growth rate varies depending on sex of fish, variant (ex/ Burundi vs Moba) and whether tank bred or wild caught. For example, I'd say that typically a male tank-bred Burundi will grow significantly faster, ex/ to 6" in the first year, than a female wild-caught Moba -ex/ 3" in first year. But my experience is limited in that I've only kept about 3 variants of Frontosa, and mostly wild-caught and only a few tank bred. One thing I've heard that seems pretty constant regardless of the other differences I mentioned is that males grow faster than females.

Hope this helps.

I have a thread on my black widows and moba. I got them small and I'm shocked how fast they grow.

Please link the thread here. There may be other factors I haven't considered.

I've had my current colony of 14 wc Kitumba for about two months. I feed them once a day and they eat quite a bit. I'm sure they would also take a second daily feeding if I tried. By comparison all the wc Moba that I've kept in the past would eat only every other day. So it appears my current group will certainly be growing at a faster rate than the Moba I've kept.

Growth rate may also depend on water change schedule.
If you change a large portion of the tanks water once per week, it will grow slower than if its done twice per week etc etc, nitrate and other chemicals that build up often slow the growth rate.
This is one of the reasons discus breeders, that want to get fry to market faster, sometimes change 90% of the tanks water per day, doesn't matter what kind of cichlid.
