My large male front has pop eye on the right side. He shares a tank with other frontosas and 2 ornate bichirs. The tank is 125g and is on a central filtration system. I tested the water 2 days ago, nitrates were 10ppm, nitrites and ammonia were 0. This is on a drip system so it's a constant water change. Every other fish in the system is fine so I'm thinking it was caused by trauma during a battle to determine who's dominant.

There is a small "pimple" above the eye that is effected.

Now, what's my next step? How do I treat it?
I'm sure I'll have to isolate the fish into a smaller tank/container but I'm not sure what meds to use. I'll filter the temporary tank with a sponge filter so I don't care if it kills the bio filter. I just want to save this beast.

Thanks in advace for your help.

This might help you diagnose what the problem is:

Good luck, I hope he gets better
Thank you! That's the page I bookmarked right before I posted this. I wanted to ask the experts and compare it to that.........looks like the experts agree.

i know how you feel bro!! my F.Frontosa is going through the same thing, three days ago i saw her eye was completely white it was bad, reason i did not see it sooner is because she likes to hide behind the big rocks,,,for the last two days I've been treating with Visine-A. and i see its working.two times a day 6 drops......this is my fourth time using Visine to treat my cichlid's...and it works...as you see lt.eye is getting better two days ago it was completly whit i could not see her eye it-all....

Ive had good luck treating popeye by doing a very large water change and then adding melafix.
Water changes shouldn't be a problem since it's on a 24x7 drip. I did dose it with Pimafix so I'll see how that goes. I'll go get the pond strength melafix tonight....I'm out of it

you should post a pic so we can see if it is actually pop eye...or injury to eye... pop eye would mean kidney disease possibly...or disease in general.. where eye trauma would mean clean water..isolation and melafix... until it heals... and i opt for this...since he is probably being poked ... and he is poking for dominance... they cause each other very slow deliberating injuries...but relentless... not like aggressive cichlids.. where big damage is fast.. hope he gets better...

Ive treated 3 or 4 fish (for popeye) with melafix and it has worked every time for me.

In fact, I just went through this last week. There was a dead fish in the tank and one of my peacocks got popeye, im not sure how long the dead fish was there but I assume thats what caused the popeye. It looked pretty bad but it was gone the day after doing a 50% water change and adding the melafix.
