I have a 4 foot 75g aquarium and was given a Fluval FX6. Will the filter be too powerful and blow sand all over my tank and create currents too strong for my fish? I'm stocking a Texas cichlid.

The flow can be controlled by the aquastop valves on the filter and/or you can diy a spray bar out of pvc that will diffuse the flow over a larger area of the tank to suit your needs.

Here is a link to the manual. Top of page 7 states restricting flow with the valve will not damage the motor.

It's better to throttle the aquastop valve only on the output I believe and not the input. That's what I do to with the quick releases on my Eheim canister which is the same concept.

Not even close to too much. My 4 foot is 120 gallons, and an FX5, the FX5 is just enough for a very gentle current. I have to turn on the Jebao RW 8 to get some movement, and that's over twice the flow.

You should thank whoever gave you that FX-6. Great filter. Currently on sale for $250 at petsmart. Normally $360.

As many have said you'll be fine. Throttle down the output if you feel its too fast of current for your fish/decor.

Someone mentioned not to throttle the input. That is 100% correct. The pump runs at one speed so if you restrict the inlet flow it can cavitate and make an air pocket which will damage it.
