I bought a geophagus labelled as geophagus jurupari. It's clearly not a jurupari, i thought it was an altifrons. But it's clearly not because of it's big spot. Can anyone help me identify it? Is it a winemilleri?
1st picture is the one in question, and the 2nd picture is also the one in question with the altifrons (can anyone also tell my which region the altifrons is from???)

i was under the impression that altifrons do not have large spots on them.. like the second picture the altifrons has a small barely visable spot. The one is question has a very large spot kind of like a bruised banana. I very well could be wrong though.

That one looks like my female that I'm ?? too. Someone mentioned altifron but like you said my female has a very big oval spot. I'm fairly new to Geophagus so I can't help you find the right id. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in.

Likely G. abalios. See this from a few days ago:

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/geophagus-id-and-question.665693

G. altifrons has little to no midlateral spot, it usually covers an area of a couple scales. There are undescribed species called sp. aff. altifrons which are comparable to altirons with larger spots, but not actually altifrons.

There are only a handful of geos with no infraorbital stripe/preopercular mark on the gill.

i appreciate all the replies, doing a bit of browsing around the internet and it definitely does look like abalios as stated. It may go back to the lfs and try to get a second altifrons. Watching altifrons with fry on youtube made me want to see that in my tank. Peathensters especially on youtube.
