Hello folks, I am hoping for some help with a geophagus id. I bought these a few weeks ago as Geophagus red head tapajos (I know they are now known as Geophagus pyrocephalus). As they have grown a bit bigger I am starting to doubt this is the correct ID.
I know its hard when they are this small, but I'm seeing a spot at the base of the caudal and I don't see this on any pics of adult redheads. So, although I know you may not be able to identify them specifically, can anyone tell me for sure if there is any chance these are young tapajos? These are not the best pics, but they are super hard to catch in a picture! I appreciate any help.

My guess is satanoperca or gymnogeophagus

I was thinking it was the newer sp from the red hump group “alto sinu”

Pair of steindachneri 100%
Agree
Whomever sold it to you, may have confused red head Tapajos, with Red hump earth eater, especially if it was a LFS, or.....they misconstrued what you asked for.
Red hump this, red head that
G steindachneri is commonly called the red hump.
One of the reasons, if I buy a cichlid I insist on the seller using the scientific name.

If your water is slightly hard, or alkaline, you may have got the best of all worlds, steindachneri comes from west of the Andes, where water parameters are less soft than east of the Andes, and the fish from the west side, are more adaptable.

Thanks to everyone - I was afraid of that. I really should have known better I guess. They were so small at first I couldn't be sure and I should have waited. I already have two Satanoperca sp. in my main tank so I don't think these are going to be compatible, sadly. From what I am reading these can be more aggressive than what I was looking for.
