My brother has been growing this giraffe catfish since July and it has grown from about 4.5" to about 10" to date. Reading up on the different subspecies there are of the giraffe catfish I was wondering if anyone on here could help us get a better ID on this fella.
Strikes me as the usual occidentalis but I am no expert. I'd ask
Yellowcat and Planet Catfish. (The genus is in limbo with an undetermined number of species as it currently stands.)
Although markings and patterns can change with environment and conditions, even from day to night, this fish most closely resembles auchenoglanis occidentalis cf. "Bouche" from Guinea, very similar markings and pattern to a pair I raised that are also shown in the Cat-e-Log @ Planet Catfish...
Yeah he was saying it was labeled as auchenoglanis occidentalis cf. "Bouche" on WetSpot from where he ordered it. What size did you pair end up getting to?
Unfortunately or not, they get really large. I sold the pair when they reached about 14" as they got too large for my 130G tank. I was in contact with the next owner after a year or two and he in turn reportedly sold them to a friend after they reached around 24" in his large tank. They continued to grow after that by several inches in their third home..
