Most glofish re too artificial looking for my taste, but I like these tiger barb glofish that has a rosy red taint that doesn’t look artificial at all. They have red eyes that distinguish them from the normal type. I have half a dozen in my planted cichlid tank and they are bold and show no fear of cichlid bully. They occupy the upper and middle water column, shoal more than school now, and I don’t see the nipping or infighting notorious of the species.

Did you mean "glofish are not just for kids"?
What you said would indicate there is a reason for kids not having glofish yet you didn't mention and reasoning.
If you meant to add a "just" then it would make sense in my opinion.

Personally I despise glofish because they look so unnaturally bright that it annoys me to the point of not keeping them but those red tiger barbs look ok in that tank. Nice planting by the way.

Yes, you’re right. The title should be “not just for kids”, but too late for me to edit.

Currently, only kids are interested in glofish, including glofish tank set up marketed for kids. I read that Taiwan is developing glofish cichlid and already selling glofish angels, that is interesting and may bring more adults into it.

Here is a link to a thread on this site that has a picture of a glo convict (stupid idea if you ask me because the company will have a much harder time enforcing their "patented" glo convict from being sold by normal people since they breed like guppies. The only thing stupider would be making glowing guppies....)

Here is a link to an article back when glo angelfish came out that includes a few pictures

A bright green glowing guppy might be interesting.

Also if it really bothers you then you could message a mod and have them change the title.

I think you meant a rosey red TINT.
A "taint" is something entirely different lol

Patent means that you cannot trade in with lfs or sell them in internet or auctions. My fish club has already rejected members from bringing glofish offsprings for auction. Glofish are very difficult to create, but amazingly easy to multiply.

I attended a talk by the guy that developed the zebra danio Glo-type in the US, he said at first after implanting the "glow" gene, only 1 out of 10,000 (maybe more) individuals would be found to breed true, so it took years and many generations, and many culls. They were using ponds in Florida.
At the time of the talk he was working on breeding true Glo- gene tetras, and starting to consider cichlids.
Although not my cup of tea, it was an interesting talk, and an interesting commercial idea in these days of hybrids, designer fish, and a declining market.

Glofish was never my taste until I saw the red glo tiger barbs that don’t look artificial.

Most glofish were created from albino strains that lack pigments to enable color transfer more obvious. Albino is already unnatural looking, and albino + glo is even more artificial.

I don’t know if glo tiger was created from albino strain or not as it preserves vivid black markings, though the eyes are red. I wouldn’t want glo tiger barbs that don’t have tiger markings.

From the web pics I saw, glo angels and glo convicts have no body markings, so they must be another albino strain transformation, not my cup. If they can preserve the markings, like making koi angel redder and blue angel bluer, that’s an improvement and I may be interested.

Blue Pinoy angels get rather blue, but I agree
