I am going to build a rack in which I am going to try and breed angelfish. For the breeding pairs I will have 15 gallons each and for rearing I will have 30 gallon. The rack that I was thinking of will be closed with something like styrofoam or something similar so that it does not loose too much heat in winter. Do you know something different or better?

This is the rack that i was thinking of

1. From the bottom aquarium to floor I will have about 10". Is this good?
2. Between the aquarium and the upper stand I will have 7" of working space. Is this good?
3. For lightning I am going to use LED's or some cheap energy savers.
4. Filters I am going to use sponge filters.
5. I will use individual heater in every tank.
6. I will use an air pump with air stone in every aquarium.
7. I will do about 15-25% WC weekly.

Tank Dimensions will be
30 Gallon
Length - 14.5"
Width - 20"
Height - 24"

15 Gallon
Length - 11"
Width - 20"
Height - 16"

Will these be good? I will make them myself. I am doing these because I do not want the rack to be long.

Any comments or ideas are more then welcome.

Thanks :)

have the bottom tanks as close to the floor as possible so you can have more space between the next level of tanks. also lower center of gravity of the entire rack. make sure styro is between floor and first level of tanks. what are you using to power your sponge filters? i would just plumb your airstones into the same source no need to waste electricity on more air pumps. my racks are built the same way.

What about sizes? and what do you breed? how do I lower the center of gravity?to power up sponge filters I am going to use an air pump. About an air pump what do you suggest I get?

1. 10" from bottom of aquarium to floor would be fine. Like surfpalmsncycads said, if you move it down, you could get more space between the levels. The bottom tanks in my racks sit 4" from the floor. When I do water changes, I find that they take to long to siphon, when I redo my tank room this summer, I am going to move the bottom tank up 3.5" (another 2 X 4) and see what I think of that.

2. On my racks I have about 8.5" of space between the top of a tank and the bottom of the next level. I don't think I would like that space much smaller. However, if the lights are removable, you can also use the space between the beams of the rack above the tanks you are doing maintenance on (for algae scrubber, etc).

3. For breeding tanks, you could probably even use strings of white led christmas lights. I imagine they won't be bright enough for a show tank but for a breeding setup, they would probably work fine. (I haven't tried it myself, just a thought)

6. One large air pump for all the tanks would be more efficient. You wouldn't need sponge filter and air stone in each tank. The sponge filter by itself would be enough.

you can get away with a large diaphram type air pump. just make sure its rated for double what your planning on using. im changing mine from diaphram to blower style but only cause im using so many sponges, stones.... diaphram will use less energy so i would use that on your set up and its way quieter.
