Hello,

I have a common goldfish and a shubunkin in a 24" aquarium for some time. At feeding time, the common goldfish chases the shis is the shubunkin as if they were spawning. I know that it is not bullying as the behaviour does not occure at any other time.

At present there diet is a mixture of frozen food and high protein pellits.

On the plus side the common goldfish is developing the spawning tubricles and I am certian that the common is male and the shubunkin is female.

The tank is filtererd by a fluval 3 internal and is lit by a single tube, on for 5 hours per day. Decor is bog wood, planting is in the form of jave fearn and anubias (growing back after the winter).

I will try and get photos if possible.

Hi. I found your recent post while googling for exactly the same thing. I have two young Orandas, and one aggressively chases and nudges the other whenever I am feeding, and sometimes just when I am there in front of the tank and they expect to be fed. This will happen whether I'm feeding vegetables, pellets or bloodworm /daphnia gel food. It also happens when they are grazing slices of cucumber and they don't see me. It seems like the aggressive one is trying to get the other to get out of the way. The chase occasionally goes halfway across the tank, but mostly it is limited to the corner where I feed. This doesn't seem to happen when there is no food about though. The one that is being shoved out has started to greet me at the opposite end of the tank. It does not seem to be too bothered by the chase, and carries on grazing the gravel, or looking for my hand for more.

Tank is 3', 6 fake plants giving a bit of cover, lit with one 30W tube.

young goldfish are mildly agressive towards each other. It's a survival instinct thing. Once the goldfish reach about 4 inches, they won't be agressive.

My Shubs and Wakins chase one another at feeding all the time. It's not brutal at all - it always seems playful.

Some folks say it's because they get territorial when there's food present. Others say it's that plus a small tank size. I have a large tank and they do it anyway but it's for a short time.
