Hello all! It's likely obvious I'm new here, but thought I'd just get that out of the way :)

This is my 2 year old Beardie, 'Digi'. Middlesex Centre-20120420-00541.jpgMiddlesex Centre-20120420-00546.jpgIMG-20111023-01016.jpgDigit on Grass.jpg

When we got him, they estimated he was about 7 months old.DSC_6934.JPGDSC_7001.JPGDigits Tongue.JPG He had a healed, but missing, right, front, pinky finger (aka 'missing a digit'), at the second joint (you can see in the close-up of him enjoying his salad) and so we named him 'Digit' and have shortened it to 'Digi', to go with 'Cali' and 'Wooki', our 2 Aussiedoodles (Australian Shepherd crossed with Standard Poodle). We also have 2 kids (1 boy/1 girl, 7 & 5, crazy over living things, just like me).

I was a nervous first timer (with reptiles, as pets), but Digi and I worked together, having 8-10 handling sessions/day and many naps together (he makes me sleepy, just like a baby...kinda like taking a sedative, I often say) and he's now, clearly, a Momma's boy!IMG_0007.JPGIMG_0005.JPG

My husband has had Iguanas in the past and I'm not a fan due to his experience (had one that was very tame and one that was inclined to whip and couldn't be tamed), but we are looking to add a large reptile to our family and hoping to make he/she as tame as our Digi. We're planning to add an Argentine Red Tegu or a Savannah Monitor to our family, but we're a bit torn between the two. We work from our spacious home, thus we have all the time to devote to our pets and plenty of room for them to grow and roam :)

I've briefly read some reviews on some similar posts in consideration between much the same (although done plenty of other researching before finding this forum), but as I'm new here, think it would be easier to find my own post versus that of another Member and was hoping you'd all kindly share your views here, as well.

Looking for the good, bad and the down right dirty/stinky on each.

I really don't like stinky things. Crickets stink! Digi does not and neither does his Terrarium (anymore). I keep my Crickets in a separate Terrarium with a sand bottom and sift the sand after each batch, because if I don't the smell is almost too much for me. Digi does not smell, in the least! I use Crushed Walnut Shells as his substrate and he rarely dirties in his tank, but even when he does I don't find it smells (other substrates I did find his matter almost enough to gag me at times).

We have been considering adopting either (the Tegu or Monitor) and just stumbled upon this forum, while searching for comparisons between the two.

Please share with me, any experience or advice you may have.

Thanking you all in advance and looking forward to further familiarizing myself with this forum over the next little while.

First off, I love the coloration on your bearded dragon!

As for the monitor/tegu, are you able to provide at least an 8' x 4' x 4' enclosure?

Absolutely. We have a starter tank and plan to build a large custom tank, as a focal point in one of our rooms. Testing temperatures before making any final plans and also awaiting our final decision between the two before we go ahead with any blueprints. :) We're extremely excited, but want to make sure we make the best choice for our family.

I would build the enclosure if you're 100% sure that you want a monitor or tegu as almost all species will need one that size; some species will need a larger one, but the two that you mentioned could live in the one that I mentioned for life. I would just keep the baby lizard in the adult enclosure, especially if you get a monitor; there's no such thing as too large of an enclosure when it comes to monitors.

And, excuse my ignorance, but THANKS, we're very pleased with Digi's coloration! I wanted to edit and add this to my previous post, but don't see an option to do so.

I believe that there should be an edit option for a little bit after you post.

Thanks Wiggles92! 8x4x4 is smaller than I was thinking, but seems a more practical size for the area of our home I am hoping will be our final resting place for this enclosure :)

if you are looking for monitor info, i would ask my brother A. gigas. He is doing some volunteer work at moody gardens right now, but he is obsessed with monitors.
