Is there any reason why a quality fish pellet, something like hikari biogold for example, wouldn't be a good turtle staple? Also wondering if anyone's tried Hikari's turtle pellets, and if so were they any good? I've always fed Reptomin along with occasional insects, market fish, and greens (only my slider touches the greens, my map ignores them) and if the Reptomin runs out before the next batch comes I give them cichlid pellets which they seem to like.

I've been feeding my turtles 2 types of Hikari Cichlid pellets along with Massivore pellets for years. They also eat 2 types of Reptomin and various live foods. I haven't bothered trying the Hikari Turlte pellets yet. I think as long as you feed a varied diet you'll be fine.

Thanks Seth. I figured the fish pellets would be fine but I was curious if anyone else was doing it. My turts also get quite a bit of natural sun so that helps too I suppose.

There's one problem with the Hikari cichlid pellets: For sliders and all omnivore/vegetarian turtles they have way too much protein. It's OK to feed them once in a while, but I wouldn't use them as staple diet.
As mentioned before, diversity is the word, just like my man Ron Burgundy said:

My eastern painted ate anything until it hit 3-4" then became picky and wouldn't touch any turtle food. For a while all i could get it to eat was NLS (very high quality fish food $) sinking pellets as a staple pellet. Has always taken bloodworms, earthworms, krill, etc but it can be time consuming and costly to feed like that on a daily basis. Now she is eating shrimp pellets and sera brand turtle pellets. Anyways she has basking spot and UVB and is growing fine...so i think fish pellets are fine in my experience.

My slider ate Reptomin because he had to. When I gave him Ken's floating cichlid pellets, he responded extremely well. he devours them faster then some fish. now, I give him a mix of both and he'll happily accept his meal.

getting turtles to eat pellets is never a problem - it's like a fat little kid @ Burger King.

Cheap turtle food can often be found at asian food shops, because they have a big diversity of frozen freshwater fish that can be fed in whole. Last time I could also buy freshwater crabs which are the perfect meal for all molluscivore species.

Sliders and Painteds as well as female maps should always be fed with veggies too. Fast growing water plants like Eichhornia, Pistia, Lemna, etc... are well accepted after some time.

Green food is even more important for cooters, they are classic herbivores.
