When he is swimming around he seems pale when he hides he is the dark color, what is going on? First picture are a couple battle wounds from my firemouth. I separated them for now. Is he a Green Severum or is he some othe kind of Severum?

C54A5394-2B06-4A02-8DBE-C21E7EBE994A.jpeg This is a better picture of him. He can see me coming up the stairs so I don’t startle him but if I move fast he freaks out and hits the glass. When he is a little darker he has the dark bar going vertical at the end of his body by his rear fin.

What's going on is he's changing color.

They change colors based on mood and surroundings. Most fish do.

Lol I hope that was a funny response not a deerrrr response. In my defense I have only seen this in my eel when I do my weekly water changes. I am new to cichlids and they do a lot of different things than the fish I have had. :)

Thank you very much for letting me know he is ok. I really appreciate the help everyone is giving me on this forum. All great

It looks to be a female. Usually dark colors and bright eyes signify breeding dress or defensive coloration.
